Marriott Vacations Worldwide Provides Scholarships with Donation to Step Up For Students
ORLANDO, Fla. – March 8, 2016 – Marriott Vacations Worldwide (NYSE: VAC) is pleased to announce its donation to Step Up For Students, its third in three years, to help provide scholarships so low-income children can find the best school for their learning needs.
For the 2015-16 school year, Marriott Vacations Worldwide has contributed $150,000, and has contributed a total of $450,000 since partnering with Step Up. The company’s contributions have funded 79 scholarships, giving parents the opportunity to select a school that best meets their child’s individual learning needs.
“We are proud to partner with Step Up For Students and are committed to bettering the lives of children in our community,” says Stephen P. Weisz, president and chief executive officer of Marriott Vacations Worldwide. “We share the organization’s passion to transform the lives of thousands of children through education.”
Step Up For Students is devoted to providing educational opportunities to those K-12 students who otherwise could not afford to attend a school other than the one assigned by the school district. Step Up is committed to giving underprivileged Florida parents a voice in their children’s education with the hope that students will thrive in a school that is a better match for them. The Florida Tax Credit Scholarship through Step Up For Students allows these children to either attend a participating private school or out-of-district public school.
“This program is literally changing lives,” said Doug Tuthill, president of Step Up For Students. “And that wouldn’t be possible without donors like Marriott Vacations Worldwide. We are truly grateful.”
Since the program was created in 2001, Step Up For Students has awarded more than 480,000 scholarships to Florida schoolchildren. Step Up is ranked fourth in Top-Notch Charities among all nonprofits nationally by Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. It is also ranked 26 on Forbes Magazine’s “The Largest U.S. Charities” list.
